Arkansas 2017

Arkansas Derby Extended Weekend Adventure
April 12 - 16, 2017

After visiting Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2015 and staying at the Lookout Point Lakeside Inn Bed & Breakfast, Kim and I were determined to return, and for a longer stay.  It just so happened that this year the Arkansas Derby weekend fell on Kim's Spring Break AND we were able to convince out best buddy Keith to join us for the weekend.  We had THE best time!  Typically on our adventures I post daily links to our adventures, but this one seemed shorter with "less excursions" so I only posted a few Facebook photos each day before building this web page/virtual scrapbook at the conclusion of the trip.  STILL we had over 125 people "Like" or "Comment" on our photos over four days.  Thank you everyone for "coming along," virtually!

Arkansas 2017 - Saturday

Saturday April 15
Arkansas Derby Day

Today the weather was fantastic and we spent the day at Oaklawn enjoying their big day of racing with some 62,500 other racing fans.  The day started off with coffee on the porch overlooking the lake; followed by a scrumptious breakfast.

About 10:15 am we headed out to the Oaklawn and found a place to park only about two blocks away - trust me that was a great deal!  First things first - our fashion photo op!  And then we headed upstairs to our seats, which overlooked the finish line!  We awaited the start of the racing action.  I won three races on the day, including the Grade 3 Count Fleet with Whitmore who was ultra impressive.  On that race Keith hit the exacta with a 30/1 runner underneath the favorite for his big score of the day.

After the day at the races we headed to the other side of downtown to the Central Park Fusion Restaurant - which had been our favorite restaurant on our previous visit.  The bad news was we received a notice in the menu that tonight was their final night of business.  The good news is that in a few months they plan to re-open at a new location.  All three of us ordered the double-cut pork chop.  DELICIOUS!  By the time we headed back to the Lookout Point Lakeside Inn it was after nine and we did some preliminary packing and headed off to bed after a long day.

Sunday - April 16
Departure Day
Today the adventure came to an end.  We were on the porch overlooking the lake one last time by 7 am to enjoy a final cup of coffee.  Took a couple of group photos and then had our last breakfast before heading our separate ways.  What a great time we had......one of the best things was (a) Kim and I both were so delighted that the Lookout Point Lakeside Inn WAS every bit the best place ever to stay and relax and (b) Keith raved about it, saying the same, confirming it wasn't just our jaded opinion!  We WILL be back.

Arkansas 2017 - Friday

Friday April 14
Garvan Woodland Gardens / Apple Blossom Day

Today was the first of the big race days, but we first started the day off with coffee on the porch overlooking the lake; we walked down by the water's edge and took a few pictures and then headed up for breakfast.....delicious as always!

Then it was off to Garvan Woodlands Gardens where we walked for about three miles all through the woods.  We'd done this two years ago and it was so gorgeous that we had to do it again.

One new thing we had not seen last time was the chapel - the glass and woodwork.....wow.

Oaklawn Park:  Apple Blossom Day
Keith arrived just as we were returning from the Garvan excursion and later that afternoon he and I headed out for the two graded stakes of the afternoon - the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes for 3yo fillies hoping to punch their ticket to the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in three weeks, and the featured Grade 1 $600,000 Apple Blossom Handicap.  Kim decided to stay at the Inn with Keith's dog, Gracie so just Keith and I headed out to Oaklawn.  There was a good crowd, though tomorrow it will be absolutely packed - the local paper suggested as many as 60,000 plus!

I only had two selections for the day.  In the Grade 3 Fantasy my pick Vexatious came with a strong bid, but had a little trouble and had to settle for third behind a 15/1 winner.  But the race I came for this weekend was to see multiple Grade 1 winner Stellar Wind in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom.  When she was a 3yo she was one of my very favorites and I scored several times with her - she had even been my bet in the Gr 1 Kentucky Oaks when third that day.  Today she looked much the best with her last five Beyer speed figures better than any LIFETIME best figure earned by her five rivals.  She hovered at 1-2 odds until three minutes to post time and I told Keith that was stealing!  But she dropped down to 2/5 as they broke from the gate - I had figured 1/5 odds were likely so I was delighted.  The race went nearly exactly as it had looked on paper as the 2nd choice in the betting, a filly who was 5-for-6 over the track was the lone speed and went right to the front.  Stellar Wind tracked her under Hall of Fame rider Victor Espinoza to the far turn.  He slid the favorite off the rail and collared the leader.  But she was determined and a stretch duel ensued to inside the 16th pole when the champion drew off late under a confident ride.  WHOOO HOOOO!

I'd won the BET of the Day and finished with a profit on the abbreviated race day adventure!  Later that evening Kim, Keith and I went out for a late Italian dinner and tomorrow we'll be at Oaklawn nearly the entire day for the Arkansas Derby!

Arkansas 2017 - Thursday

Thursday April 13
Spa Day - Day 2

Yesterday once we'd settled in to our room at the Lookout Point Lakeside Inn both Kim and I agreed that we'd both be very content to spend the majority of today, our second day, just enjoying being here at the B & B.  When we woke up, around 6:30 and gazed out we could see it was a very foggy start to the day.  But we were awakened to crisp temperatures and the sound of the chirping birds - very pleasant start to the day!

By 7 the coffee was ready and we had our first cup sitting on our porch taking photos of the birds as they landed and fed in the bird feeder right outside our porch.  Neither of us are "bird people," but we've found that on both trips here we truly enjoy the birds and listening to them sing.  This morning I was thinking how we have LOTS of loud birds in our backyard along the water, but they are clearly "Florida birds."  These birds brought back memories of being in Ohio as a youngster hearing the birds on a spring/summer morning.  :)

Shortly after 8 breakfast was served, and just as we remembered from our previous visit, it was delicious!  A great way to begin our second day's adventure.

We decided we'd walk the neighborhood - about a two mile round trip outing.  I first took a few photos of the Inn - both inside and out and then we headed out.  SOOOO many beautiful, and big, homes over looking the lake!

Once we got back we met the owner, Ray, in the front parking lot and chatted with him - he and I had corresponded prior to our visit and he'd called me once to answer a question.  He and his wife have been very appreciative of our returning for a second visit.  Kim went for a run and I began handicapping the races for the weekend.  Then the highlight of the day came when we drove to downtown Hot Springs where there are a series of historic hot springs spas.  Kim had made us an appointment at the Quapaw Bath.  We were quickly ushered into our locker rooms to undress and return in just our robes.  Then escorted to our private bath where we soaked for almost a half hour in what was called a "Mineral Silk" session.  The water wasn't hot, just warm, but the minerals were supposed to act like a de-tox.  Then we put our swim suits on and were led to one of the original underground caves where we enjoyed another near half-hour of steaming.  All very refreshing!

Kim took a nap and I finished handicapping the Saturday card of races for Arkansas Derby Day.  At 4:30 it was time to head out to the lobby area where the "happy hour spread" had been laid out.  We enjoyed a few chips and some wine.

The last item of our laid back day - what I termed to Kim was like a "day at sea" when we cruise - was our dinner.  We'd decided last night that we so enjoyed the food and ambiance of the Back Porch Grill that we'd go back.  So we got our table on the deck, enjoyed the view and then had a delicious meal - both of us got seafood which were smaller portions but every bit as good.

Remember that the owner of the restaurant is an owner of thoroughbreds?  Here are a couple of photos of the decor of the inside of the restaurant.

Tomorrow after breakfast we plan to head out to the Garvan Woodland Gardens - we really enjoyed walking around there, very much like a national park.  And then we'll head out to the races for the two big graded stakes with Keith who is scheduled to arrive sometime early afternoon.
